We generally follow the same schedule everyday except on days we have specials.
Arrival- As children arrive they unpack, sign in and work at the tables doing morning tubs (tubs change with our themes)
Morning Meeting- Good Morning song, Morning Prayer, Pledge, Count the
children that are present (including simple addition), calendar
Bathroom/snack-Children take turns passing out snack
Centers- Before centers, we come together to have a brief lesson pertaining to our theme. We may read a book/ poem or do a group activity to lead us into the centers. There are 13 centers (ABC, Art, Blocks, Discovery, Dramatic Play, God and Me, Library, Listening Center, Math, Playdough, Puzzles, Table Toys, Writing Center) in our the classroom which change regularly based on our current theme. Each center has room for a designated number of children. Two centers are adult led. All of the children are asked to come to the centers that are led by the adults.
Bathroom/Gross Motor- We love to get out on the playground! If the weather does not permit us to get outside, we will find a good space to do some big movement activities (ex. the lunchroom).
Story/Songbook- To help get settled for lunch, we read a story and/or the children select a few songs from our song book (choices change monthly based on the time of year or theme).
Lunch- PreK eats in our classroom. This is such a social time for the children. When the children finish their lunches, they look at books on the carpet and have a short relaxing, quiet time until most friends have finished eating.
Group game- Altogether the class plays a game related to specific concept (rhyming, things that go together, opposites, etc.)
Bathroom/Gross Motor- Another opportunity for us to get outside.
Afternoon Centers- We continue our centers in the afternoon. Children who did not have an opportunity to work at the adult led centers in the morning, are asked to join them in the afternoon.
Clean up/pack up/dismissal- At the end of the day, the children help tidy up the classroom and get ready for dismissal.
I hope this gives you a glimpse into what a day in PreK is like.
